California/Oregon Teaching American History Program

What is it? Del Norte Unified School District, Humboldt State University, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and The White House Historical Association, along with local museum partners are implementing a Teaching American History Grant.

Who can participate? All K-8 teachers and 9-12 Social Science teachers. In addition, Alternative Education, Charter school and special education teachers are welcome.

How long is the Program? ONE YEAR.
2006/07 K-5 Teachers
2007/08 6-8
2008/09 High School Teachers

What is the class schedule? Three Saturdays and one Friday per semester (substitute and travel costs will be provided). One museum workshop per year. A twenty hour (3 days) summer workshop to develop curriculum after the summer trip. The first workshop will be held September 30th 2006.

What is the summer commitment? There is an optional 8 to 10 day summer study trip to New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington DC. Travel, lodging and admissions are covered by the program.

How many units can I earn? 6 to 9 graduate units will be available.

Is there a stipend? Participants will receive a $1,500 stipend upon completion of the program.

What will I learn? A review of major events in American history and how best to integrate American history into your classroom. Lectures from notable historians, professors, presentations from national historic organizations and demonstrations of how to use museum and online American history resources.

What will I read? Participants will read three books per semester and three for the summer trip.
Examples include: (1) Huck’s Raft: A History of American Childhood, (2) Founding Myths (Revolution), (3) Founding Brothers (Constitutional Era), (4)Walking With The Wind (Civil Rights). All books will be purchased for you by the program.

Is there other travel? Funds are budgeted for approximately one half of the participants to attend a regional or national History/Social Science conference, a Gilder Lehrman , or a NEH Summer workshop during the year they participate. Substiute costs will be covered by the grant if needed.
